What's Assessed
- Cold-start behaviour — smoke colour, idle smoothness, and how quickly the engine settles
- Oil condition, level and any signs of contamination or mixing with coolant
- Visible leaks around the head gasket, sump, rocker cover and front/rear seals
- Belt and hose condition, including timing belt where accessible
- Unusual noises under load during the road test — ticking, knocking or whining
- Diagnostic scan for stored or pending fault codes across the engine management system
Why Cold Starts Reveal More
A warm engine hides a lot. Rough idling, excessive smoke, or a rattling timing chain are often most obvious in the first 60 seconds after a cold start — which is exactly why we try to check the vehicle before it's been driven that day.
